About Sustainable Sisters

Gia Machlin started Sustainable Sisters™ because she saw a tremendous opportunity for healing and change. She's is honored to participate in two very impressive business spheres: women owned enterprises and sustainable businesses. And while there is some overlap between these two worlds, they don’t intersect as much as one would expect.

There seems to be a disconnect within the women entrepreneurship community: these thoughtful, mindful women leaders, who are already paving the way by making a big impact in the world with innovation, philanthropy and economic growth, are not, in general and as a community, also taking a leading role in environmental stewardship.

Gia saw an opportunity to bring environmental awareness to this community of very purposeful women pioneers so they can take a leading role in fighting climate change by contributing to projects that draw down greenhouse gases. As mothers and grandmothers and authentic leaders, they can become the consummate stewards of the planet in which we all live.

Phase One – Awareness and Education

Sustainable Sisters™ is a non profit corporation and we are in the process of filing for 501(c)(3) status.

This site is meant to bring awareness to the existential threat of climate change, and the economic and global instability that results from a warming planet. It highlights what is being done in both the private and public sector to reverse the detrimental effects of global warming. In particular, we focus on the role that educating women and girls has on fighting climate change. We also hone in on how climate change disproportionately affects women and girls globally.

Phase Two – Membership & Donations

Women owned businesses can join Sustainable Sisters by donating a percent of their revenue to the 501 (c) 3 organization. These funds will be donated to selected projects that are found to have the greatest impact on fighting climate change. For example, Project Drawdown, the world’s leading resource for climate solutions, has found that improving the health and education of women and girls can reduce/sequester the equivalent of 85.42 gigatons of CO2 between 2020 and 2050.

Members of Sustainable Sisters™ will receive a badge that they can display prominently on their company websites and in their marketing material to show that they are making a contribution to reducing greenhouse gases. While there are ways for businesses to go “carbon neutral,” this requires significant accounting of the company’s carbon footprint in order to offset it. Sustainable Sisters™ will not require any kind of carbon accounting or make any claims of carbon neutrality or carbon offsets. Its primary focus will be to bring awareness and funding to projects that impact the reduction of greenhouse gases.

Phase Three - Integrating Sustainability into Business Operations

Sustainable Sisters will have a consulting arm that will guide women-owned companies that want to take the next step in becoming a sustainable business through the process of: applying for B-Corp certification; attaining Climate Neutral certification; or meeting other environmental goals.
